About the Fountain Theatre

“The Fountain Theatre is, by far, the best and the brightest that Los Angeles has to offer.” - Broadway World

The intimate, award-winning Fountain Theatre is one of the most highly regarded theaters in Los Angeles.  We develop provocative new works or explore a unique vision of established plays that reflect the immediate concerns and cultural diversity of contemporary Los Angeles and the nation. In an era of urban anxiety, ethnic hostility and wavering spirit, the Fountain offers a safe, supportive haven for artists of varied backgrounds to gather, interact and inspire each other toward the creation of work that will ignite and illuminate the community from which it’s drawn and give creative voice to those who may not otherwise be heard.

Founded in 1990 by Co-Artistic Directors Deborah Lawlor and Stephen Sachs, the Fountain has won more than 200 awards for theatre excellence in all areas of production, performance and design. It holds the distinction of being nominated and winning more awards than any other intimate theatre in the history of the Ovations Awards, and is the only intimate theatre to have the Ovation Award for Best Production of a Play five times. The Fountain also has the honor of being nominated for the prestigious Best Season Ovation Award for overall excellence every year since the newly created category was launched three years ago. The Fountain won the award last year.

The Fountain has been honored with five Awards of Excellence from the Los Angeles City Council, and a Certificate of Appreciation for demonstrating years of artistic excellence and “enhancing the cultural life of Los Angeles.”

New plays developed at the Fountain have won the PEN USA Literary Award for Drama and have twice been named PEN finalists. Fountain projects have been produced in regional theaters around the country, Off-Broadway in New York, and internationally throughout the UK. The Fountain enjoys longtime artistic relationships with such noted playwrights as Athol Fugard, Dael Orlandersmith, Lee Blessing, Israel Horovitz, Ifa Bayeza, and the estates of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tennessee Williams and August Wilson.

As the Los Angeles Times states, “Broadway caliber! Everything is first class at the Fountain.”
